Game 42 Preview: Chatham at Harwich

On August 4, the Chatham Anglers and Harwich Mariners (17-22-2) will battle in game one of the East Division semifinals. Before the two teams reach that point, they will face off Tuesday at Whitehouse Field for their final regular season matchup.

The Anglers have yet to lose to the Mariners this season with each game being decided by three runs or more. Chatham hits .308 with a .412 on-base percentage against Harwich while its pitching staff has a 3.20 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 45 innings. On the flip side, the Mariners hit .171 when lined up against the A’s.

Harwich comes into Tuesday’s game having lost four of its last five contests. The Mariners only win in that span was a 8-5 victory over the Bourne Braves on July 27. Heading into the ninth inning, the game was tied at five. With two outs in the inning, Harwich pushed across three runs via a Logan Driscoll (George Mason) single and a Ben Norman (Iowa) double.

Chatham is 2-1-1 in its last four games. The A’s lost to the Falmouth Commodores on Sunday and tied the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Friday. In both games, the Anglers bullpen blew seventh-inning leads.

Against the Red Sox, Austin Bergner (North Carolina) threw six shutout innings as Michael Busch (North Carolina), Drew Mendoza (Florida State) and John Rave (Illinois State) provided four runs of support. Once Bergner was relieved, Y-D capitalized. Facing Reeves Martin (New Orleans) and Spencer Van Scoyoc (Arizona State), the Red Sox scored four runs to tie the game.

Two days later, Alek Manoah (West Virginia) threw five shutout innings of his own. Chatham took the lead in the first inning when Blake Sabol (Southern California) scored on a Colin Simpson (Oklahoma State) groundout. But it all fell apart in the seventh, as the Commodores scored five runs in the frame off Zack Noll (Point Loma Nazarene) and Van Scoyoc.

With the second seed in the playoffs locked up, Holliday said he is going to rotate players to keep everyone fresh for the playoffs.

Over the past week, six players — Tristin English (Georgia Tech), Greg Jones (UNC Wilmington), Busch, Mendoza, Sabol and Simpson — are hitting over .300. Simpson — who has been one of the best players in the league in July — has two home runs, two double and nine RBIs in the past seven days.
