Chatham falls to Wareham, 9-2, for the fourth time this season

CHATHAM — It was deja vu all over again.

The Wareham Gatemen had scored a run in the first inning, like they had on June 12, June 19 and June 27. Unlike those three previous matchups, the Chatham Anglers responded.

After Michael Busch (North Carolina) singled home John Rave (Illinois State) to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the first, Chatham loaded the bases for Rankin Woley (Auburn). Woley could not deliver, as he grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

That was as close as the Anglers would get. Wareham scored in four of the next five innings en route to a 9-2 victory at Veterans Field.

“We probably put ourselves in jeopardy in each inning either with a walk or with an error or with a missed played groundball,” Anglers manager Tom Holliday said. “We did a lot to create the trouble that we were in.”

Isaac Collins (Creighton) led off the game with a single and Austin Shenton (Florida International) was plunked to put two runners on base. Chatham starter Davis Daniel (Auburn) worked a 3-2 count on cleanup hitter Jeremy Ydens (UCLA) before the centerfielder ripped the payoff pitch to left-center, scoring both runners and giving the Gatemen a two-run lead.

Wareham added its next three runs with two outs. After getting two quick outs in the second inning, Daniel allowed another run on just two pitches. First, Jakob Goldfarb (Oregon) hit a ground rule double before coming home on a Collins single.

Collins provided another RBI in the fourth when his two-out single scored Ryan Kreidler (UCLA). The two UCLA Bruins in Wareham’s lineup added the team’s fifth run an inning later. With two gone, Kreidler singled home Ydens.

“Getting a third out of an inning has a lot to do with throwing a quality strike and we didn’t throw many tonight,” Holliday said. “As good as we pitched yesterday, we probably pitched just as bad tonight.”

Six-straight batters reached base in a four-run sixth that blew the game wide open. Drew Millas (Missouri State), Goldfarb and Collins loaded the bases without having to swing the bat. Millas and Collins walked while Goldfarb was pelted. Back-to-back-to-back singles from Sahid Valenzuela (Cal State Fullerton), Shenton and Ydens cleared the bases and also scored Valenzuela.

Chatham added a run in the sixth. John Rave (Illinois State) doubled to start the inning and then scored when Busch doubled two batters later.

“I try and not really change my approach even though there is a guy on maybe second to third,” Busch said. “Just try to get a good swing on the ball and try to get a runner on or get a runner in.”

The loss marks the Anglers’ fourth defeat to the Gatemen on the year. In the four contests, the A’s were outscored by 22 runs.

Chatham made a last minute lineup change when Greg Jones (UNC Wilmington) was not fit to return to action from an injury. The change moved Jorge Arenas (Stetson) to shortstop from third base, Woley moved from second to third, Busch moved from first to second and Jake Taylor (Oklahoma State) was inserted to play first base.

Busch — who played second base for the first time this year Tuesday — made a few nice plays in the field. The Tarheel said he hopes he gets more opportunities at second base in the future.

“It's fun to switch it up a little bit and get over there and play second base,” Busch said. “It's interesting cause I haven’t played it for so long.”
