Game 4: Brewster at Chatham

Game 4: Brewster at Chatham

After shutting out the Brewster Whitecaps, the Chatham Anglers will look to score a second-straight victory over their Eastern Division rivals, this time at Veterans Field.

Chatham (1-1-1) put together its most complete performance of the young season in a 8-0 victory over Brewster (0-2) on Thursday.

All nine of the Anglers starters reached base during the game and each batter contributed to the eight runs by either scoring a run or collecting an RBI. Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) knocked in a game-high three runs thanks to an opposite-field home run in the fifth inning.

Tristin English (Georgia Tech), Kyle McCann (Georgia Tech) and Ben Ramirez (Southern California) each recorded their second multi-hit game of the season.

On the mound, the Anglers pitching staff had its second consecutive day of dominant performances. After the trio of Kyle Hurt (Southern California), Jeff Belge (St. John’s) and RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) gave up only one run and six hits while striking out 10 on Wednesday against Y-D, Thursday’s triad was even better. Cody Bradford (Baylor), Hunter Gaddis (Georgia State) and Greg Veliz (Miami) combined for no runs allowed, five hits and 12 strikeouts.

The Whitecaps have struggled at the plate in two games so far this season. In 63 at-bats, the team has 13 hits and 23 strikeouts. Brewster’s pitchers have stumbled out of the gate as well, giving up over a run per inning and have a combined WHIP of 2.06.

Chatham did the little things right in Thursday’s contest — including taking the extra base on balls in the dirt and playing sound defense. Manager Tom Holliday said the team is going to continue to strong in those areas.

"We're going to be fundamentally sound, play the game right," Holliday said.
