Anglers close out series against Red Sox at home tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (20-21) face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (26-14-1) for the sixth and final time this season at Veterans Field tonight. Chatham leads the series with three victories over the Red Sox, most recently including a 4-2 win against the team at Red Wilson Field Friday.

Sunday, the Anglers fell to the Harwich Mariners (14-26-1) 2-1 in an extra-innings heartbreaker.

Harwich designated hitter Nick Dalesandro (Purdue) sent center fielder Antoine Duplantis (LSU) home a two-out single in the eleventh inning, stealing the victory away from Chatham.

“We’re not paying attention to the details,” manager John Schiffner said. “We didn’t move runners over like we should have, we didn’t execute, we missed signs.”

A tie of one sent the teams into extra frames, after a bases-loaded walk of shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) plated left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College) in the eighth for Chatham’s lone run of the evening.

On the mound, five Anglers carried the team through the loss.

Starter Austin Bergner (North Carolina) kept it steady, allowing one earned run with a trio of strikeouts over five innings.

Reliever Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) shut the Mariners down over two scoreless frames.

“The first inning I kind of felt shaky with my slider,” Metzdorf said. “In the second inning I got into a rhythm, used my legs a little bit more, so I felt better ... and then I kind of used some timings I’ve been working on in the second inning, which really messed with hitters, so it was good.”

Nick Rand (Massachusetts Lowell) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) also kept blank slates, before RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) took the field in the final frame.

“Pitchers can do a better job not walking guys later in games — ultimately, it’s hard to hit in this league, so walks can cost us,” Metzdorf said. “If we clean up that, and the defense keeps playing it the way they know they can, then we should be good.”

Jeff Belge (St. John’s) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Belge most recently took the team’s 7-2 loss to the Red Sox July 25, allowing five earned runs with four strikeouts over 2.1 innings.

After splitting a pair of contests against Brewster (19-20-2) with a 4-2 victory Saturday and a 5-1 loss Sunday, Yarmouth-Dennis bested Bourne (20-21) 5-1 Monday.

The Anglers travel to Orleans (27-14) Wednesday, before closing out the regular season against the Firebirds at Veterans Field Thursday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
