Schiffner to be honored as Anglers host Mariners tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (20-19) face the Harwich Mariners (12-26-1) for the fifth time this season at Veterans Field tonight. During the game, Chatham skipper John Schiffner will be honored for his 25 years of service as manager of the Anglers program.

Chatham and Harwich share a split record, both entering the contest on a pair of wins and two losses.

Friday, clean pitching kept Chatham afloat in a 4-2 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (24-13-1).

Starter Justin Lasko (Massachusetts Amherst) kept the Red Sox at a distance, allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts over five innings.

“I had a lot of my pitches working today,” Lasko said. “I felt comfortable throwing either the fast, curve, change or slider for strikes at any time.”

Third baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the top of the third, plating two on a single. First baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) knocked in another run to widen the advantage for Chatham.

Yarmouth-Dennis’ Darren Trainor (Lewis-Clark State) answered in the bottom of the third, hitting a solo home run to center field. But the game was out of reach for the Red Sox.

Right fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) sent Aiello home on a groundout in the fifth to secure the victory for the Anglers.

A scoreless bullpen closed the door on Yarmouth-Dennis in the final four frames. RJ Freure (Pittsburgh), Dan Metzdorf (Boston College), Adam Wolf (Louisville) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) combined to keep the slate blank.

“They just threw strikes, and got the batteries out,” said manager John Schiffner. “They just threw very well, mixed their speeds well, and they just did an excellent job.”

Jack Perkins (Stetson) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Perkins most recently took the team’s 12-3 loss to Cotuit July 21, allowing two earned runs over three innings.

Last night, the Mariners bested the Cotuit Kettleers (18-18-1) 7-2, after their 4-1 Thursday loss to the Bourne Braves (20-18) eliminated a chance at clinching a playoff berth.

The Anglers travel to Whitehouse Field to close out the series against the Mariners Sunday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
