Chatham sweeps Bourne 8-2

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (6-7) swept the Bourne Braves (7-5) 8-2 at Veterans Field Tuesday. Right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) led Chatham with 3 RBIs and a pair of hits, while center fielder DJ Artis (Liberty) notched one RBI and two hits.

Olson opened scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the third, before first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware) sent second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) home on a sacrifice fly.

Bourne relief pitcher Carter Henry (Houston) plated left fielder Mason Koppens (Northeastern) on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth. Olson sent third baseman Jake Palomaki (Boston College) home on a sacrifice fly, before Artis scored on a wild pitch to widen the lead. Designated hitter Shea Langeliers (Baylor) and Artis each added RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Zac Susi (Connecticut) and Andrew Fregia (Sam Houston State) hit back-to-back solo home runs for Bourne in the top of the seventh, but the game was out of reach for the Braves.

Starter Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh) earned the win for the Anglers, throwing five strikeouts and no walks over 6.0 scoreless innings. Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell) and RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) combined for 3.0 innings of relief.

“Everything just fell in line tonight, and it was a good team win,” Hammer said.

“We did everything that you’re supposed to do,” said manager John Schiffner. “We executed on some small ball, we took advantage of the other team’s mistakes, we got some clutch hits, we got excellent pitching, and all around played good defense.”

Christopher Holba (East Carolina) handed Chatham three earned runs with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings, before Henry and Christian Ryder (Georgia) completed the game in relief.

“It’s a matter of executing — just executing and performing,” Schiffner said. “Things clicked, they did things right, [and] everything worked out for us.”

“Going into next week, I feel really comfortable going back out there,” Hammer said. “The team will feel great going into the next game.”

The Anglers visit Brewster (6-6-1) Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
