Friendly Faces Make Welcomed Return

Chatham, Mass. — Looking to build off of their walk-off win last night over the Brewster Whitecaps, the Chatham Anglers (12-19-1) play host to the Cotuit Kettleers (11-20-1) tonight at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field.

The Anglers enter the contest flying high after Orlando Garcia lifted Chatham to victory with his walk-off single in the ninth inning on Tuesday night. The win was Chatham’s first since July 6 and came at the perfect time for an Anglers team that is looking to make a playoff push.

Cotuit is currently reeling after being dealt its third consecutive loss Monday night in Falmouth. In that contest the Commodores beat up on their division rival, downing the Kettleers 12-0. The loss was Cotuit’s second straight shutout defeat.

A Hunter’s Return: With a plethora of injuries plaguing the Anglers this season, manager John Schiffner has been forced to bring in replacements. However, instead of busing in new faces from across the country, the skipper decided to bring back two former members of the A’s, Hunter Lee and Reed Howell.

Lee, a High Point University sophomore, appeared in 15 games at the beginning of the summer as a temporary player, going 8-for-43 with four walks and five RBIs. An emotional leader of the team, Lee was an integral part of last night’s game through his energy in the dugout – something that sparked an enthusiastic Anglers squad into bedlam as they rallied in the final frame.

“I’m a loyal guy, and [Lee and Reed Howell] deserved the right to be on this team, its just they got caught in the numbers game,” said Schiffner. “Now we lose players and they’re available and I feel they deserved to comeback.”

Lee will look to help bolster a Chatham offense that is averaging just over three and a half runs per game in its last ten contests.

Howell at the Mound: After departing the Anglers following Chatham’s 6-0 loss to Harwich back on June 23, Reed Howell returns to Veterans Field in an attempt to help aid an Anglers pitching staff that has been ravished by arm injuries.

Losing the likes of James Karinchak, Nick Meservey, Austin Magestro, and Kale Breaux in the last week, Chatham’s bullpen will highly benefit from the return of a pitcher of Howell’s caliber. In five appearances for the Anglers in June, Howell struck out 12 batters over 10 and two-thirds innings while crafting a 2.53 ERA.

“We preach loyalty, we preach that once a Chatham A, always a Chatham A, and they’re back,” said Schiffner of his two returnees. “I can’t be happier that they’re here.”
