Notebook: Game 25 @ Falmouth

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers venture to Guv Fuller Field for their third of four matchups with the Falmouth Commodores tonight at 6 p.m.

Chatham (11-13) has gone 3-4 since the start of July, a continuation of the team’s .500 play in June. Falmouth (14-10) has won four straight games dating back to its 2-0 win over Cotuit on July 4. With the win streak, the Commodores have overtaken the Wareham Gatemen for first place in the West Division. The Anglers currently hold the fourth spot in the East.

At the Plate

While the Anglers managed five hits in Friday’s loss to the Brewster Whitecaps, Tanner Gardner continued his hot start in the CCBL by driving in his fourth run in two games. Gardner stroked a sacrifice fly to deep center that plated Jake Palomaki two days after his eleventh inning three-run homerun lifted Chatham to victory over Wareham.

At Texas Tech, Gardner led the Red Raiders in batting average, with .379, and hits, with 89. His six triples was also a team-high for the College World Series team.

“I’m very blue collar, I like to play the game hard,” said Gardner. “I like to hustle, I like to have good at bats at the plate. I’m not one to show anybody up. That would be the best way to describe me as a baseball player, blue collar.”

Kansas infielder Matt McLaughlin, has led the charge for the Commodores recently, stringing together three straight multi-hit games. In the past week, McLaughlin has hit .500, driving in seven runs while also scoring three – including a grand slam in Falmouth’s Wednesday night victory over Brewster.

On the season McLaughlin is hitting .226 with 10 RBIs.

On the Rubber

Chatham will once again trot a different pitcher out to the mound for today’s start. Caleb Gilbert (0-0) of LSU will make his first starting pitching appearance tonight after coming in as a reliever twice this summer. In games against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and the Orleans Firebirds, Gilbert pitched four and two-thirds innings total, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out two.

In Baton Rouge, Gilbert went 4-4 in 25 appearances — five of which were starts. The right-hander crafted a 5.04 ERA in 44 and two-thirds innings as a freshman for the Tigers.

Fellow SEC pitcher Brady Singer (0-0) takes the ball for Falmouth in the freshman’s second start on Cape Cod. In his lone appearance for the Commodores, Singer tossed a one-hit shutout through six innings against the Y-D Red Sox on July 2. The righty also struck out two of the 22 batters he faced but did not factor into the decision as Y-D staged a late inning rally to upend Falmouth.

During his rookie campaign in Gainesville, Singer posted a 4.95 ERA en route to a 2-2 record in 23 total appearances.

Down the Road

Chatham plays host to the Harwich Mariners in a 7 p.m. game at Veterans Field on Sunday. Following a day off on Monday, the Anglers will welcome the Bourne Braves to Chatham for the fourth and final game between the two teams. Make sure to catch all the action and the Anglers Extra Pregame Show with Jake Eisenberg and Evan Stockton on the Cape Cod Baseball Network.
