Simon Matthews looks to lead Anglers to victory

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers will head to Bourne for the second straight day, after defeating the Braves 8-3 last night. Georgetown’s Simon Matthews takes the hill for Chatham, looking to help his team to a three-game winning streak.

The right-hander led the Hoyas with a 2.45 ERA, and 5 wins, while coming in second on the team in strikeouts with 59. Matthews was also the only member of the Georgetown pitching staff to pitch a complete game, a feat he accomplished five times this past season.

DS: What pitches do you like to throw?

SM: I throw a sinker-fastball so I like to stick with that as much as possible. Then I throw three off-speed pitches: changeup, slider, curve.

DS: What’s the day of a start like for you? What do you do to prepare?

SM: I read a lot on a start day. It kind of focuses me, locks me in. And then I rest up to try and make sure my body is feeling as good as possible.

DS: Do you have a specific book that you read?

SM: Just whatever book I’m reading at the time. Right now it’s “No Country for Old Men” by Cormack McCarthy.

DS: Players come down to the Cape League and usually have an aspect of their game that they are trying to improve. What are you trying to work on, if anything?

SM: I’d like to get better and work on all three of my off-speed pitches. At [Georgetown] this year, I relied heavily on my fastball, and it worked out decently well. Obviously I’m [in the CCBL], but, I think if I want to take the next step personally as a pitcher, I need to be able to rely more on my off-speeds.

The Anglers got hits from eight different players last night, winning consecutive games for the first time all season.

D.J Artis and Patrick Mathis built off of solid games against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox by driving in two runs apiece yesterday.

Joey Thomas, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, led Bourne in the Braves’ first loss of the season.

Cincinnati’s JT Perez toes the rubber for Bourne today, in the lefty’s second start of the season. As the Opening Day starter against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, Perez went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out seven. He posted a 2.97 ERA at Cincinnati this year, throwing three complete games in 13 starts.

Chatham will be back at Veterans Field tomorrow at 7 p.m. against the Brewster Whitecaps. The home stand ends rather quickly however as the Anglers will then head to Falmouth on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest with the Commodores.
