Notebook: Game 4 @ Brewster

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (1-1) take on the Brewster Whitecaps (1-1) in Chatham’s first away game of the season. First pitch gets underway at 5 p.m. at Brewster’s Stony Brook.

At the Plate: In a game with limited offense against Orleans, Patrick Mathis led Chatham offensively last night. The Texas product delivered the key hit for the Anglers as his eighth inning triple brought in the eventual winning run. It was Mathis’s second hit on the season.

Another new face will be in the Anglers’ dugout tonight as Wake Forest’s Stuart Fairchild has arrived in Chatham. The sophomore outfielder suited up in all 62 games for the Demon Deacons this spring, going .293 with a team high 20 doubles. In his 2015 rookie season, Fairchild ranked fourth all time amongst Wake Forest freshman with 68 total hits.

Defensively, Fairchild sported a .980 fielding percentage, making only four errors all season as the team’s centerfielder.

In the Whitecaps 11-6 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Maryland’s Nick Dunn led the Brewster onslaught with three hits and two RBIs.

As a freshman with the Terrapins, Dunn was the only player to hit .300 or better. His 68 hits, and 16 doubles both were bests for Maryland while his 31 RBIs were good for third on the team. Dunn struck out a team-low 25 times.

On the Rubber: North Carolina’s Trevor Gay will be on the mound for Chatham in the right-hander’s first start of the summer. “I’m a heavy sinker guy, so I’m going to mix in a lot of two-seam and four-seam fastballs,” said Gay. A transfer from North Carolina –Charlotte, Gay was unable to pitch for the Tar Heels this spring due to NCAA rules. During his time with UNCC, Gay pitched in 20 games of relief for the 49ers and started three. He complied a 3-3 record with a 5.94 ERA and held opposing teams without an earned run in 10 relief appearances.

With a heavy mix of both lefties and righties on the roster for the Whitecaps, the 6’ 3” sophomore has been focusing on how to approach each side of the plate. “I’ve been working a lot on my changeup and slider, so probably changeups to lefties, and sliders to righties,” said Gay.

The opposition will feature some familiar faces for the right-hander, as two Brewster infielders, Zach Gahagan and Logan Warmoth, are teammates of Gay’s at Chapel Hill. “I faced them in the fall so I know how to attack them a little better than other hitters.”

Taking the ball for the Whitecaps will be Tyler Zuber, a righty from Arkansas State. As a junior with the Red Wolves, Zuber went 5-3 and made 8 starts. Appearing in 19 total games, Feltner threw 69 and two-thirds innings while compiling a 6.59 ERA and one save. Opposing hitters racked up a .335 average against the righty, the highest amongst Arkansas State starters.

Down the Road: Chatham continues its four-game road trip by visiting Yarmouth-Dennis for the first time on Tuesday. The contest gets underway at 5 p.m. The following day the Anglers will play their makeup game with the Bourne Braves at Doran Park.
