Angler offense looks to ride momentum heading into Y-D

The Angler bats had been quiet going into last Monday’s game against the Wareham Gatemen (9-9). They had scored fourteen runs over the previous 7 games and were batting .210 as a team. Then they broke out and for nine runs.

“We had good clutch hitting [Sunday night],” said Manager John Schiffner. “These kids put together some good at-bats and played good baseball.”

The box score was headlined by Aaron Knapp (California), who legged out a crucial infield single and drove in two runs, and Will Craig (Wake Forest), who also had two RBIs in the game. Nate Mondou (Wake Forest), Trenton Brooks (Nevada), and Nick Sciortino (Boston College) accounted for the other runs driven in.

Every batter in the Chatham’s starting lineup reached base, and seven of them eventually came around to score at least one time. At the end of the night the team had tallied 12 hits and four walks. It was the best offensive Angler performance of the year in terms of runs scored, hits, and total bases.

“They took a lot of good swings tonight,” said Schiffner. “Good for them.”

Tonight the Chatham Anglers (10-8) will look to ride Sunday’s offensive momentum into a 5 p.m. contest with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (8-10) at Red Wilson Field. The Anglers are 1-1 on the year against the Red Sox and most recently played them in a 3-0 loss last Sunday.

The probable Chatham pitcher is A.J. Puckett (Pepperdine). Puckett gave up one earned run and struck out one batter over 3.2 innings in his only outing this summer. The right-hander had seven wins and was second on the Pepperdine roster with 97.1 innings pitched during the college season.

Yarmouth-Dennis is expected to counter with Brett Adcock (Michigan). Adcock is 1-2 with a 4.90 ERA in four starts this summer. He has recorded 14 strikeouts and 10 walks in 14.2 innings for the Red Sox.

First pitch is 5 p.m. at Red Wilson Field. Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott have call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 4:40 p.m. It can be heard toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841 or at TRZ Teamline.
