Anglers to Battle Harbor Hawks at Veterans Field

by George Barclay, 07-02-2012

Anglers to Battle Harbor Hawks at Veterans Field On Monday night, the Chatham Anglers (8-6) return to Veterans Field to take on the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (2-12). The Anglers are 5-5 in their last 10 games and have 16 points in the Eastern Division. Chatham won its last matchup with Hyannis on June 17 by the score of 4-3. The Anglers are coming off a 12-2 loss on Sunday night to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Red Wilson Field.

"We need to have some more competitive at-bats," said assistant coach Pat McGee. "We need to get deeper in the count, advance more runners and drive guys in. We've had a lot of missed opportunities on the base paths in our last two games."

Chatham has left 10 runners on base in its last two contests.

Boston College's Eric Stevens (1-1, 5.79 ERA) will make the start for the Anglers on Monday night. The six-foot five right-hander gave up six runs on seven hits in three and a third innings in his last start against Cotuit on June 24 and suffered the loss. Stevens will face a Harbor Hawk team batting .219 collectively and that has 31 stolen bases on the season.

"We need Eric to control the running game," said McGee. "Hyannis is very aggressive on the bases. Eric cannot give away free bases tonight."

Hyannis will send North Carolina Charlotte right-hander Tyler Barnette (0-1, 2.00 ERA) to the mound against Chatham. Barnette received a no-decision in his last start against Bourne on June 24, allowing one run in six innings and striking out two batters. The North Carolina native has been the Hawks' most consistent starter this season, leading a team that gives up an average of 4.71 runs per game.

The Anglers head into Monday's game batting .220 as a team and still lead the Cape League in walks with 61. Chatham is led at the plate by left fielder Aaron Brown (Pepperdine) and center fielder Adam Engel (Louisville), who are batting .290 and .289 respectively. Third baseman Chad Pinder (Virginia Tech) is now tied for second in the Cape League in RBI with 14.
