Anglers Come Out On Top In Another Pitcher's Duel

by Scott Braun, 07-05-2009

One day after falling to Orleans 1-0, the Chatham Anglers got the win by the same score against the same opponent on Sunday evening at Eldridge Park.

After losing six of their last seven games, Chatham finally halted their losing skid thanks to a strong pitching performance from lefty starter Tyler Lyons. Though he only struck out one batter, Lyons pitched seven shutout innings and picked up his first win of the season.

All of the scoring Chatham needed came in the top of the sixth inning when Whit Merrifield reached base on a single. Brian Harris bunted him over to second base and then Steven Brooks was intentionally walked. A double steal executed successfully by two of the speediest runners on the team put two runners in scoring position for first baseman Parker Bangs. Bangs hit a ball that was caught deep enough in the outfield to score Merrifield on the sacrifice fly and put the Anglers ahead 1-0.

The story of the game aside from the pitching was Manager John Schiffner's decision to play small ball. The Anglers were sacrificing runners over and stealing bases more than they had all year. They finished the game with seven swipes, with Brooks and Addison Johnson stealing two each.

The 11-7 Anglers return home Monday night to take on the Harwich Mariners at 7PM. Tune in to the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40PM.
