Game 25 Preview: Orleans at Chatham

Chatham faces Orleans for the fourth time in 11 days, returning to Veterans Field after tying Brewster 4-4 on Friday. The Anglers last win of the year came in their previous matchup against the Firebirds on the Fourth of July. Chatham is 1-6-3 in its last 10 games.

Probable Pitchers

Ben Hampton (West Virginia) will take the mound first for the Anglers. The lefty last pitched at Harwich, allowing one hit in 6.1 innings. He finished with a 4.66 ERA this year at WVU, striking out 90 batters.

Donye Evans will start for Orleans, making his second appearance against the Anglers this year. He held Chatham to one hit on July 3 in five innings of work. Evans has a 0.75 ERA this season.

Chatham Players to Watch

Noah Ledford (Georgia Southern) smacked his second home run of the season last night, also bringing Caden Grice (Clemson) home in the top of the second. Manager Tom Holliday said Ledford is not a “singles hitter,” and that he now understands he can strike out if he’s “hitting a home run every now and then.”

Grice had the Anglers’ other two-run homer blast on Friday, giving Chatham a 4-0 lead. He led all batters with two hits, striking out twice. Holliday said Grice is “unpredictable” in the box, but he’s provided much needed spurts for the offense this season.

Orleans Players to Watch

Kevin Sim smacked his first home run of the season on Friday, tying Cotuit’s Tyler Johnson and Brewster’s Alex Freeland for the league leader in the category. Sim has a .250 batting average, working up a team-leading 11 walks so far this season.

Luke Keaschall is the only Orleans player with more hits than Sim, recording 26 this season. He’s brought in eight runs, hitting .306. The junior notched 67 hits for 34 RBIs in 2022 at the University of San Francisco.

Stat to Know — 186

Orleans’ batters have struck out 186 times this season, tied with Cotuit and Hyannis for the least in the league. The Anglers lead the CCBL in batters struck out (237), but their pitching staff has struggled as of late.

Last Time They Played

Hours removed from the Fourth of July celebrations in Chatham, which paraded the team around Main Street on the back of a big rig, the Anglers erupted on offense with a home run from Ledford in his second at-bat.

“A buddy of mine said home runs are an accident,” Ledford said. “It felt really good, I’ve been hunting for that one all year. Hopefully that was the turn around I needed, and especially for the team too.”

The Anglers finished scoring in four different innings, tying their previous season-high of seven runs scored in a single game. And they did it all on eight hits.
