Game 4 preview: Harwich at Chatham

Chatham — After their first off day of the season on Thursday, the Chatham Anglers (2-1) will play their second home game of a three-game home stand against the Harwich Mariners (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Chatham played its first three games against West Division opponents but will begin divisional play tied for first in the East standings.

The Anglers lost their first game of the season on Wednesday, 1-0 against Falmouth. The Chatham pitching staff dominated the Commodores but a ninth inning unearned run proved the difference as the Anglers failed to get a runner to third base all evening.

Probable Pitchers

RJ Dabovich (Arizona State), a native of Pueblo, Colorado, will make his first appearance and start for the A’s on Friday night. The right-hander can reach 98 mph with his fastball and posted a 4.75 ERA for the Sun Devils in 26 appearances this season. He spent his freshman year at a JUCO, Central Arizona College.

Luke Bartnicki (Georgia Tech) is the first pitcher that manager Tom Holliday will use a second time this season. Bartnicki came in for a one-out save in Tuesday’s eight-inning win over Cotuit. The left-hander threw just three pitches, striking out the lone batter he faced to complete the save. Wednesday, Bartnicki said he felt good, as if he hadn’t even thrown. Now, Holliday is turning to him again for multiple innings Friday.

Dane Acker (San Jacinto) was chosen in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but opted to go to Oklahoma starting in the fall after posting a 10-0 record and 2.36 ERA for San Jacinto this season. Acker’s fastball tops out around 92, and he’s effective with his off-speed changeup, slider and curveball.

For Harwich, Buddy Hayward (Harvard) will start. The sophomore right-hander made eight starts for the Crimson in 2019 with a 4.31 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 48 innings.

Stat to know — 0

Through three games, the Chatham pitching staff has allowed zero earned runs after the third inning. As a whole, the pitchers have a combined 2.00 ERA —six total earned runs allowed in 27 total innings. Only Falmouth, which has allowed just one earned run in two games, has a better ERA than the A’s.

Last season

The Anglers and the Mariners played six times in the regular season, and twice more in the East Divisional Series. Chatham won all eight meetings, four at home, four away.
